Recovery as a Spiritual Journey
My best friend from back home's name is Lucy. She & I have known one another since kindergarten, but became best friends in eighth grade & remained to be best friends up until this day.
Around two months ago, she took a huge step in her life & admitted to herself (& her friends & family) that she has a problem & needs help addressing it. Shortly after coming to terms with this, she began rehab. I can already tell she has changed so much in these past few months... even something as small as the way she talks has changed significantly! She sounds so different to me. She sounds happier, more aware, & just more there, if that makes sense...
Okay, in no way shape or form am I trying to discredit all of the hard work she has put in to resist urges & change her habits, but I don't think that all of the differences in her is solely coming from her newfound sobriety. I think a huge part of the changes in her life are coming from her discovering more about herself & her relationships through the therapies & reflection techniques provided to her. She has also found significantly better uses of her time & energy, whereas in the past she would be putting most of her time & energy into mindless & draining technology (I do it too, for sure...).
I think that her recovery is one-hundred-&-ten-percent a spiritual journey.
In rehab, all the way across the country, mind you, she is completely taken out of her day to day life, especially being without technology on top of the completely new environment she is in. This is absolutely crucial for any spiritual journey to take place.
Without the stressors & dramas of her day to day experiences, her life is opened up for reflection. She has spent a lot of time reading & writing, & her technology free days have left her with a lot of time to think deeply. She has realized things about herself that would be hard for anyone to admit to themselves, as humans we want to believe we can do no wrong.
Seeing her embark on this journey has seriously inspired me. I have watched her practically turn her life upside down... The problem she was facing was incredibly severe, yet she was strong enough to fix it for the sake of herself & the people in her life. I love her more than anything & I am so thankful that she was able to have a spiritual journey as transformative as this one has been for her.
Though she is still not back home, I can already tell she truly has been on her own spiritual journey.
