Abigail Boone: Journal 3 - The Phenomenology of Prayer (63-74)
In this chapter of "The Phenomenology of Prayer" it talks about prayer relating to kenosis. Kenosis is a term that was talked about multiple times in class that basically means the emptying of ones self. This goes hand in hand with praying because an individual must clear their mind and decenter themselves to fully be present and interact with God. Another topic brought up in this chapter is that to pray for goods only as a means to do good. I thought about that sentence for a while, I was extremely confused and couldn’t quite understand what it meant. As I continued to read, I realized that prayer is implied as a promise. Prayer is a promise to receive something in order to give something. So, by becoming good, instead of possessing goods, it allows one to escape the earthly economy and have more relation with the sacred.
