Abigail Boone: Journal 5 - Landscapes of the Sacred (38-93)
While reading this chapter, I got a better understanding of the elements that create a sacred place. One approach to understanding a sacred place is that it is where supernatural forces have invaded the ordinary. This is called the ontological approach. At first I had no idea what that meant but as I kept reading I started to understand little by little. A sacred place comes from within. There is no right or wrong when it comes to this topic. Another approach to understanding a sacred place is the cultural approach. This approach involves the analysis of the place within social science methodology. It is able to identify culture from hidden claims of a place. I understood this approach a little bit more. The way I comprehended it was that if a place was mentioned in the Bible, one may feel more connected if they were to ever visit that specific place. The last approach mentioned in this chapter was the phenomenological approach. This approach recommends to interpret the site and understand why it is thought of as sacred. Although I am not sure I have ever had an experience with a sacred place, I do believe that one day I will.
