Abigail Boone: Journal 7 - Image & Pilgrimage in Christian Culture (172-255)

The section of the book I read traces how medieval devotions grew into universal pilgrimages. It had a lot of information and was very overwhelming to read. A part that shocked me the most was that in the past pilgrimages were used as a punishment, in hopes that the individual would learn from what they have done and pray for forgiveness while on their journey. When they arrived back from their pilgrimage, the church would forgive them. Nowadays, pilgrimages are done out of joy and are not a punishment whatsoever. The book states that pilgrimages are more of a religious routine, rather than belonging to reaggregation.
