Jackie Stallworth - Choice of Topic 2

In my English 223 class, we’re reading The Handmaid’s Tale. In summary, it’s about a radical religious organization that takes over America and strips all the women of their human rights and forces them to have sex with powerful men that they are considered property of in order to get pregnant because the fertility rate is so low. Because this is a religion class of sorts, I couldn’t help but connect the two. While none of the book ever really takes place in a sacred place, I feel like a woman’s reproductive organs would be considered the main sacred place in that society. The fertile women get extra security and "protection", and they are sort of treasured because they're basically the only hope for producing children and the whole society revolves around this process. It's where life is made and built and comes from. I think it even follows the axioms, for example, a woman’s womb is made ritually extraordinary. I guess the ritual would be childbirth, I’m not completely sure about that. Let’s just say that even though it’s one of my favorite books, I’m glad that there is a separation of church and state and that we aren’t governed by people that take scripture out of context to excuse abuse.
