Jackie Stallworth - Image and Pilgrimage 1

Chapter 1

There was quite a bit about Catholicism, so naturally, I paid some more attention to that, because that’s what I’m most familiar with. When I was younger, I remember always being confused about Catholicism vs Christianity. It never felt right to say that I was a Christian because even though it’s under the umbrella of Christianity, Catholicism always seems to be kept separate. What I do remember is that Catholics worship Mary, whereas Protestants do not. In terms of the differing views about pilgrimages, the book mentioned that Catholic pilgrimages have “transformed into extended and protracted forms of such sacraments as penance and the Eucharist” (32). While I do know of various Catholic sacred places, such as the Vatican, I don’t remember priests at my church growing up ever mentioning pilgrimages, which makes me think that it’s not a priority or a common experience. At least at my church, it wasn’t.
