Jackie Stallworth - Image and Pilgrimage 2
pgs. 172-255
I found it interesting how this book details pilgrimages in the major religions as opposed to just how Christians view it. I keep going back to the idea of Catholic pilgrimage because this book keeps bringing it up. I think one of the reasons that I hated church so much growing up was because there was no sense of communitas. Everyone at my church was very stand-offish, very impersonal, and no one ever really interacted with each other. I think maybe if I had been exposed to other religions, or maybe even just a different choice, where the community was actually there and made a priority, I would have been more inclined to enjoy it. On page 225, it says, “… communitas is an essential and generic human bond…” and I definitely did not have any of that at church. Even during Sunday school, all the kids went to Catholic private schools and they all knew each other so they had a community that had already been formed for years. I was never a part of it because I went to public schools, so maybe if I had gone to a Catholic school and had a grander connection with faith, I would have been included.
