Outside reading (1): Skylar Minick

One outside reading I chose was the book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Man’s Search for Meaning is a thought-provoking novel that gives insight into the lives of the average prisoners of the holocaust, written by a man named Viktor Frankl who experienced this tragedy firsthand. Frankl speaks of his experiences while imprisoned in a few of the different Nazi concentration camps, as well as illuminating some of the experiences that other regular prisoners endured during their imprisonment. He speaks of the daily torments and tortures they faced very factually and apathetically, which is the second of the psychological phases that he says the prisoners are subject to, the first being pure shock. He talks a great deal about the mental implications of being subjected to such a great deal of suffering and torture stating that if the prisoner does not have a strong mindset, that they will not survive. He also spoke a lot about religion and how faith was a savior for many prisoners, because It gave them something to live for even when faced with unthinkable torments. Those who held their faith with them and did not just give into a mindset of uncontrollability were the ones who made it out alive. The whole book was a journey to not only find the meaning in his life but to find the meaning for life and living when faced with so much death.
